Teaching Assistant

The Duston School is looking to appoint a Teaching Assistant to work under the instruction/direction of the secondary phase SENCO/teaching staff to support the delivery of quality learning and teaching of pupils with special educational needs.

The successful candidate will work with children and young people who have a range of significant and often complex SEND for example those with autism, social, emotional and mental health difficulties, severe or moderate learning difficulties and those who exhibit challenging behaviour. He/she will undertake specified work with individuals, groups under the direction and supervision of a qualified teacher and  encourage the participation of pupils in the social and academic processes of the school, enabling pupils to become more independent learners. The successful candidate will undertake work/care/support programmes to enable access to learning for pupils and assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.

The school currently has 6  students across keys stages with Educational, Health and Care Plans (EHCP).  Teaching assistants are employed to work both in the classroom and at times 1:1 with these children in a range of lessons.  The hours are based on the school day contracted from 8.30 to 3.30pm daily (4.30pm on one day per week). The type of assistance required is based around in class support allowing full access to a full mainstream curriculum.

Detailed information is provided at the beginning on each term regarding students’ needs and changes to the support timetable.
